I am a mathematics tutor and computer science tutor based in Lexington, Massachusetts. Patient, positive, and focusing more on students' strengths than weaknesses, I enjoy finding ways to help students to gain facility, depth of understanding, appreciation of mathematical thinking, and reawakened curiosity. I help students to discover connections between new topics and things they already know. Working this way, students gain fluency and confidence as they see math more as a coherent body of knowledge and as a powerful way of thinking, and less as a series of disconnected facts and techniques. I do all of this with a sense of humor, building genuine relationships with my students.

We can work on pretty much any topic from elementary school math through BC Calculus, including the PSAT and SAT math tests (Math SAT and the Math subject tests, Levels 1 and 2) and ACT Mathematics test, as well as computer science from basic Web design through AP Computer Science. I welcome homeschoolers.

As your tutor, I work for you. Some days you might want to embrace the struggle to learn deeply; other days you might want to blast through a homework assignment as quickly as possible. It's up to you.

A bit about my background: I have been a full-time math tutor and computer science tutor since July 2009. I taught math at Lexington High School, at the Edwards Middle School in Charlestown, and at the Cambridg-Harvard Summer Academy at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (the latter two as a student teacher). I hold an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, an M.S. in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a B.A. in mathematics from Carleton College, and a Massachusetts teaching license. Before becoming an educator, I worked for many years as a computer software engineer. Music has been a constant thread throughout my life. For more information on my background, please see my résumé.

One of my students taught me the Einstein quote from which I took the passionately curious motto. That quote inspires me, and I hope it inspires my students as well. It is a reminder to my students and to me that reawakened curiosity is a big step towards mastery.

Please get in touch if you have questions or are interested in setting up a tutoring session. The first session is on me, so why not?
