Fingers crossed [daughter 3] will remember what she learned, as she is embarking on her college career in engineering. Good luck with the school year. • You tutored him many years ago in math and one of the things that you mentioned was that he was always trying to solve problems in his head rather than write them out with all the details, which was quite often why he wouldn't be able to solve a problem but was very capable. He recently graduated from NCSU with a degree in chemical engineering, which is very heavy in math! He was required to take several math courses and had to write out every single step of every math problem in order to get points on his homework and tests. Very ironically, he now tutors extensively, including North Carolina middle school and high school math and calculus courses on the side and really enjoys helping students! I'm sure that you are a positive subconscious role model for him! —a parent

  • Many, many thanks for your work with our daughter. I cannot believe I didn’t sign her up with you last year….she just had too much on her plate for me to even think about tutoring. Ironically, math was her lowest grade last year even though she has such tremendous aptitude. She is suddenly seeing herself as mathematically talented — which my husband and I have known for a long time. She’s already into the college of her choice, so it’s not about the grade, but we want her to feel confident pursuing quantitative courses. She took a calc “quiz” today (which are actually tests) and she was the first one finished and had that “Ah-ha - I aced that!” feeling for the first time since 10th grade in her opinion. We’ll see what the grade actually says but it doesn’t matter. The joy of mathematical understanding is what counts right now! Thanks for being there :) —a parent
